The Ultimate Cathay Pacific Experience
An insider’s look at Cathay’s exclusive lounges and First Class Cabin
This is my first time reviewing a commercial flight. For those who don’t know, I’ve always had a thing for airplanes. Since I was a kid, I loved that distinct smell as you step onto the plane, the thrill of arriving at the airport, and the excitement of knowing you’re going somewhere. Airports and airlines have always fascinated me—even to the point that I used to memorise plane types and seat configurations for routes I frequently traveled.
This flight was my first experience flying Cathay Pacific’s First Class. I’d previously flown with Cathay in 2015 and 2016, both times in Business Class from Zurich to Jakarta via Hong Kong, and Hong Kong to Bangkok. Each trip left a strong impression; the ground staff and cabin crew were warm and attentive, making the experience truly memorable.
Now, as I prepared to move back to Jakarta from London, I began considering my options for redeeming 135,000 AMEX points. Singapore Airlines’ new Suites were tempting, but the unfavorable AMEX UK conversion rate and limited availability made it tricky. Emirates First Class—with its added chauffeur service—was appealing, especially with my three large suitcases, but the steep mileage and £865 in taxes were deal-breakers. In the end, Cathay Pacific was the best choice: 120,000 miles, only HKD 3,851 (around £380) in taxes, a generous baggage allowance, and access to their signature lounges. Plus, flying through Hong Kong felt like a nostalgic feeling as it’s the place where I started working abroad.
Here, I’ll take you through every detail—from check-in at Heathrow’s Terminal 3 to Cathay’s luxurious lounges, the in-flight experience, and even a special conversation with the brand ambassador of Hong Kong’s iconic Pier Lounge.
Airline Insights
Founded in 1946 in Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific began as a small airline with just one Douglas DC-3 to one of the world’s leading airlines. The carrier’s name was inspired by a combination of the Chinese and Pacific regions, symbolising its dedication to connecting East and West.
Renowned for its exceptional service, Cathay has set the standard for high-quality air travel. The airline's commitment to innovation is reflected in its fleet, which incorporates the latest technology for both efficiency and comfort. Their attention to detail—from seamless ground services to their refined in-flight experiences—has earned Cathay Pacific a reputation as one of the most respected carriers in the industry.
Today, Cathay Pacific continues to be a symbol of Hong Kong’s international spirit. With a fleet that combines modern design and cutting-edge technology, the airline is not just a way to travel but an experience that reflects the city’s vibrancy and global outlook.
Check-in
CX’s check-in counters are located in Heathrow’s Terminal 3, where most of the Oneworld Alliance carriers operate. The check-in process was smooth and efficient, and I was in awe with the First Class baggage allowance of 32kg per bag, totaling an impressive 96kg—one of the most generous allowances I’ve seen among airlines. I also received fast-track security access and passes to the First Class lounges in both Heathrow and Hong Kong.
Flying out of Terminal 3 was such a change for me and I was pleasantly surprised by its more ‘fancy’ feel compared to Terminal 2, the Star Alliance terminal where I usually depart from. That said, Heathrow’s security checks, regardless of the terminal, could still use some improvement.
Lounges
I’m genuinely speechless—the Pier, First, Gate 63 Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport and in Heathrow are the best lounges I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been to Qatar Airways’ Al Mourjan, Singapore Airlines’ Private Room, and Lufthansa’s First Class Lounge, but Cathay Pacific’s lounges capture my vibe like no other. The colour palette, furnishings, and serene ambiance all blend perfectly. The service is equally phenomenal: warm, attentive, and genuine.
Designed by acclaimed British interior designer Ilse Crawford and her team at Studioilse, The Pier in Hong Kong and Cathay’s Heathrow lounges embody comfort and sophistication. Crawford’s human-centered design approach emphasizes natural materials, soft lighting, and residential-style furnishings, making these spaces feel welcoming and cozy.
The Pier’s thoughtful layout—complete with zones like The Teahouse, The Noodle Bar, and massage area where get a 15 minutes complimentary treatment. It also provides travelers with a calm retreat amidst the airport’s bustle. With its understated luxury, The Pier has earned a place among the world’s most celebrated lounges, and for me, it’s the ultimate lounge experience.
In-Flight Experience
As I stepped onto the plane, two flight attendants greeted me warmly. One introduced himself, explaining he’d be looking after me throughout the flight, walking me through the amenities - they provide Bamford amenity kits and pyjamas, entertainment options, and helping me settle in with my luggage and jacket.
This time, I was flying on Cathay’s B777-300ER, which features four classes: First, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. First Class has just six seats, all filled on this flight. For comparison, Singapore Airlines (SQ) has just four First Class seats on the same aircraft; I flew with them with mum from Paris to Singapore in early 2020 - which was a superb journey. While Cathay’s First Class design feels a bit outdated, I have to admit the seats are some of the widest and most comfortable I’ve experienced. And, honestly, I prefer Cathay’s fabric upholstery over the leather seats that SQ and Emirates use—it feels more homey and warm.
Cathay’s in-flight entertainment could use an upgrade, especially compared to the extensive selection offered by Emirates and SQ. But what truly sets Cathay apart is its service: attentive, sincere, and not robotic. While SQ had three dedicated attendants serving me and my mum on that CDG-SIN flight, each with a specific role, I found Cathay’s one-on-one more genuine, even if it sometimes meant waiting a bit longer for certain requests.
As for the food and drinks, they were fine but didn’t particularly stand out. Personally, I prefer the dining experience in Turkish Airlines and British Airways’ premium cabins, likely due to their partnership with DO & CO, an Austrian catering company known for high-quality, restaurant-style meals.
Conversation with The Pier, First Lounge Ambassador
As I was ordering a Pimms at the bar, I happened to meet and chat with the lounge ambassador. We struck up a conversation about the aviation industry, and I mentioned that it had been nine years since I’d flown with Cathay and that this was my first time visiting The Pier. He shared that this lounge is a favorite among travelers, with many passengers actually choosing longer layovers just to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.
Her name was Liu, if I recall correctly, and she’d been with Cathay since the days of the old Kai Tak Airport, which operated from 1925 to 1998. We discussed how COVID-19 impacted Cathay, and I commented on how there seemed to be just one attendant per section in First Class now. Liu nodded, saying it was a good observation. Since the pandemic, Cathay had to reduce its workforce to manage losses and maintain cash flow. He also mentioned that the airline had retired its subsidiary, Cathay Dragon, which ceased operations in 2020.
Conclusion
All in all, my experience with Cathay Pacific was memorable in so many ways. From the hand-written welcome notes to the relaxed lounge ambiance and the friendly, attentive staff, every detail felt special. I can only hope Cathay will return to its former glory and perhaps to revamp its First Class cabin, as it’s starting to show its age. Especially with the recent launch of their new Aria Suite in Business Class, I can’t help but wonder—does this mean they might retire First Class altogether?
